EPO Munich (DE)

The European Patent Office (EPO) – the second largest public institution in Europe, with 7 000 staff members and a self-financed annual budget of EUR 2bn – is looking for two lawyers to work on patent law-related projects and tasks.

The successful candidate will be part of Directorate European and International Legal Affairs, PCT, which has as its mission to further strengthen the patent system both at European and international level and represents the Office in these matters. High-priority projects, alongside its day-to-day work, include the implementation of the unitary patent package, the further harmonisation of substantive and procedural patent law worldwide, and the continued optimisation of procedures under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).

The directorate is now seeking two committed lawyers specialised in European and international patent law, in particular the PCT and/or EU law and public international law, to help both with these projects and with its day-to-day tasks:

Main duties

  • Supporting EPO activities in the field of PCT, in particular
o assisting in the further development and practical implementation of the PCT and the PCT Instructions and Guidelines
o providing legal advice on matters relating to the development and optimisation of the PCT procedure at the EPO
o dealing with applicants' enquiries as well as drafting communications and legal decisions in the PCT procedure
  • Performing research on specific legal issues and drafting analyses and studies in the area of international patent law, including providing support for the effective internal implementation of agreements
  • Dealing with issues of EU law and public international law
  • Contributing to the further development and promotion of the EPO's legal policy and proposals
  • Other tasks as needed

The ideal candidate will have

  • a law degree with focus on patent law and/or job-related legal fields
  • a successful track record, preferably at mid-career level, of working on patent-related matters on an international level and in international team environments with highly skilled professional co-workers
  • very good knowledge of either the PCT procedure and/or of EU law and public international law
  • a natural bias for action, a high degree of commitment and self-motivation, and a proactive approach to getting things done
  • a strong service focus and proven ability to work efficiently, prioritise workflow and meet demanding deadlines
  • the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • strong analytical skills and excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills

Minimum qualifications

  • Diploma of completed university studies at master's level or – in exceptional cases – equivalent professional experience
  • Excellent knowledge of one official language (English, French and German) and ability to understand the other two
  • Citizenship of one of the member states of the European Patent Organisation

Salary and benefits
The EPO offers competitive salaries, an excellent social package, and varied work in a modern international environment. The net (basic) monthly salary* for this vacancy ranges from EUR 5 317.77 to 7 530.93, depending on experience. In addition, depending on their personal circumstances, EPO staff may be entitled to relocation benefits and various allowances (e.g. household, dependant's, childcare, education, expatriation, installation, rent and language allowance).

* after deduction of EPO internal tax and before deduction of staff contributions to the social-security and pension schemes.

Recruitment process

At the end of our selection process, we may place suitable candidates on a reserve list for a limited period of time. Being on a reserve list does not guarantee a job offer or imply any entitlement to employment at the EPO. You will be considered automatically for vacancies in your field. No action is required on your part unless we contact you.

Procedure and timeframe
The successful candidate will be selected on the basis of qualifications and experience, supplemented as appropriate by interviews, tests and / or a personality questionnaire.

Candidates are asked to indicate, in order of preference, the type of contract desired (permanent v non-renewable contract).
